Youth Leadership / Gavel Club — District 70 Toastmasters

Youth Leadership is a short course like a Speechcraft course, but is aimed at school students.

There are generally 8 one to two hour sessions where students develop communication and leadership skills through practical experience. The program is presented during or after school, or on weekends. Students learn to:

Evaluate present speaking ability
Organize and give speeches
Give impromptu talks
Control voice, vocabulary and gestures
Give constructive feedback and more

A local Toastmasters club serves as sponsor and provides a coordinator to present the program. The individual co-ordinator attends each meeting, where he or she will lead most of the presentations and help the students. The co-ordinator assigns an assistant who can fill in for the coordinator should he or she be unable to attend a meeting. Meetings generally follow a format similar to that of a Toastmasters club meeting, including an announced agenda, practice in parliamentary procedure, and the selection of presiding officers.

GAVEL CLUB

Gavel Clubs operate the same way as Toastmasters Clubs, but are for students.

This is a great club which gives children the opportunity to improve their communication and public speaking skills and its for children under 18 years.

Gavel clubs are a way of providing the Toastmasters experience to groups who may be ineligible for regular membership due to age, or other circumstances. Following similar Toastmasters club meeting protocols, Gavel clubs use club officer titles and education manuals. However, gavel club members are referred to as “gaveliers”. Gavel clubs also provide Toastmasters members and clubs with an excellent opportunity for community service.

Inner West Gavel Club - Meets every 1st & 3rd Sunday of each month, 10:45am to 12.15pm at the Memorial Hall in Concord, 138 Majors Bay Road. Ages: 12-17 years.
